Understanding Private Midwife Costs in London

A positive pregnancy test can bring joy, relief and a startling number of decisions. If standard appointments already feel rushed, or you want one trusted person who understands your family from the beginning, private midwife costs may be one of the first practical questions on your mind.

The honest answer is that costs vary widely. A single postnatal visit is very different from months of one-to-one antenatal care with a midwife on call around your due date. The useful question is not simply, “How much is a private midwife?” It is, “What support would help us feel informed, in control and properly held?”

What do private midwife costs usually cover?

Private midwifery is personalised care, booked directly with an independent midwife or midwife-led service. It can sit alongside NHS maternity care rather than replace it. Your scans, consultant appointments and place of birth may still be through the NHS, while your private midwife offers time, continuity and tailored guidance around those appointments.

What is included depends on the package or appointment you choose. Antenatal support may include longer pregnancy appointments, birth preparation, help to understand your options, discussion of your birth preferences and practical planning for the first weeks at home. A midwife who knows your history can also help you make sense of information from other professionals without making decisions for you.

Postnatal care may cover parent recovery, newborn feeding, settling into life with your baby, emotional wellbeing and the questions that rarely fit into a short appointment. Infant feeding support is often offered separately or as part of a wider package. For many families, this is where dedicated time makes a meaningful difference: feeding is not always straightforward, and reassurance is most useful when it is specific to you and your baby.

A full continuity package may also include birth support or on-call availability. This is generally the largest part of the investment because it asks a midwife to protect a period of availability around your estimated due date, often for many weeks. It may include support at home in early labour, at a planned home birth where appropriate, or as a birth partner in hospital. The exact role will depend on the midwife’s service, insurance arrangements and your clinical circumstances.

Typical private midwife costs in London

London pricing reflects the cost of providing highly individual care, travel time and, for some services, round-the-clock on-call cover. As a broad guide, one-off appointments often cost from a few hundred pounds. A focused feeding or postnatal consultation may be priced similarly, particularly when it includes a home visit and follow-up support.

A package of antenatal or postnatal appointments will usually cost more, but may offer better value than booking each session individually if you know you would like regular contact. Full continuity care, particularly when birth attendance and an on-call period are included, can run into several thousand pounds.

These figures are a starting point, not a promise of what any one provider will charge. A lower price is not automatically better value, and a higher price is not automatically the right fit. What matters is whether the care offered matches the level of support you genuinely want.

Why birth support changes the price

Birth is unpredictable. A midwife providing on-call care may need to keep their diary flexible, be ready to travel at any hour and arrange reliable backup if needed. This availability is skilled professional time, even before active labour begins.

Ask exactly what “on call” means. Does it cover a set number of weeks? Is there a named backup midwife? What happens if labour begins before or after the agreed period? Is hospital attendance included, and are there any additional hourly charges if labour is prolonged? Clear answers protect everyone from unwelcome surprises at an already intense time.

Travel, timing and follow-up

Home visits can make early parenthood feel much more manageable, especially when leaving the house with a newborn feels like a logistical expedition. They also involve travel costs and time. Providers may set a service area, charge for travel outside it, or offer virtual appointments where that is suitable.

Follow-up contact is another important difference. Some appointments include a brief check-in afterwards. Others offer messaging support between visits, a set number of follow-ups or a longer period of ongoing access. This is not a small detail. For parents who value quick reassurance between appointments, it can be one of the most valuable elements of a package.

What to ask before you book

A good provider will be comfortable discussing fees openly and without pressure. Before committing, ask for a written outline of what is included, when payments are due and what happens if your needs change.

It can help to ask about these practical points:

  • the number, length and location of appointments

  • whether support is antenatal, postnatal, feeding-focused or a combination

  • on-call dates, birth attendance and backup arrangements

  • travel fees, evening or weekend charges, and any costs not included in the package

  • cancellation, refund and transfer policies if your pregnancy or birth plans change.

You should also ask who will provide your care. Continuity means more than seeing a familiar face once or twice. If having a named midwife matters to you, establish how much of your care will be with them and when another trusted colleague may step in.

Choosing the right level of support for your family

You do not need to book the biggest package for private care to be worthwhile. One well-timed appointment can bring clarity at a difficult point, whether you are weighing up induction options, preparing for a planned caesarean, adjusting to feeding challenges or processing a birth that did not go as expected.

A smaller package can suit parents who feel broadly happy with their NHS care but want extra time for birth preparation or feeding. Regular antenatal and postnatal support may be a better fit if you are anxious, managing a complex schedule, living away from close family or simply know that continuity helps you feel calmer.

For LGBTQ+ parents, intended parents and families navigating surrogacy, the value may also lie in care that understands your family without requiring repeated explanations. Your questions may not fit conventional assumptions about pregnancy, birth, bonding or feeding. Inclusive care makes room for the practical details and emotions of your particular journey.

Private midwifery should never make you feel sold to. The right care feels collaborative: someone listens carefully, explains your options in plain language and respects that your priorities may change.

Looking beyond the price tag

Private care is an investment, and it is reasonable to weigh it carefully against your wider family budget. Think about the moments where more time, continuity or specialist feeding guidance would genuinely ease pressure. You may decide that a few focused appointments offer exactly what you need, or that having a midwife who already knows you around birth and early parenthood is worth prioritising.

You are not paying only for an appointment in a diary. You are paying for clinical expertise, careful listening, preparation and a steady person who can help turn a flood of information into decisions that feel right for your family.

The best choice is the one that leaves you feeling supported, understood and never as though you are navigating this alone.
